Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY Tutorial

Filed Under: Christmas, Crafts, Freebies, Tutorials

I am doing a homemade ornament exchange with 17 other ladies and was a little stumped at first. I really love birds, and yarn, so I decided to do a yarn wrapped bird ornament. I used materials I already had on hand, which is a win/win!

Supplies Needed:

  • Recycled Cereal Boxes
  • Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Yarn
  • Twine
  • Buttons
  • Bird Template

DIY Bird Ornament

1. Find Your Template

If you want you can use mine, just download it. You can print it,  cut it, trace it on recycled cereal boxes. Or if you have a silhouette machine you can open it in the software and use your machine to cute it out. Just adjust the bird to the size you would like it to be. I had hand drawn and hand cut out all my birds. Took awhile.

2. Find Your Yarn

I used yarn that I already had on hand, but you can use whatever color you would like. I would recommend using a thicker yarn. Makes it a little easier.

3. Start At The Tail

Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY Tutorial

Put a little bit of hot glue on the tip of the tail, then hold the yarn there for a bit.

4. Wrap The Bird

DIY-Bird-Ornament-Wrap

Just start wrapping the yarn around the bird.

5. Glue At The Curves

Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY Tutorial

When you get the curves you will want to put a touch of glue to hold the yarn in place so it doesn’t all bunch up.

6. Keep Wrapping And Gluing

Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY Tutorial

Just keep wrapping and gluing. You can tell when you need the glue to keep the yarn in place. Do this all the way to the beak.

7. Cut Off The Yarn At The Beak

DIY-Bird-Ornament-Cut

When you get to the beak, cut off the yarn and glue the excess yarn to the back side of your ornament.

8. Make The Ornament Hanger

Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY Tutorial

Take some twine and cute it to the length you would like. Then glue that on the back of your ornament.

9. The Button Eye

DIY-Bird-Ornament-Button

Take some thin twine and thread it through the button holes, then tie in the back. Cut off the excess twine. Next just hot glue the eye onto the bird.

10. Your Done!

Yarn Wrapped Bird Ornament | DIY TutorialThat is it. Pretty simple.

6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adans 6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adansonii because it was very tall but not bushy. It was nerve wracking at first. I had 5 total cuttings that I put into water. 4 of the pieces had roots longer than 2 inches with some secondary roots. The last piece is still in water, it has some roots but not enough, so giving it a bit more time. Where I cut it is also making a new stem and I noticed further down it was trying to branch out in other places. Hopefully it takes off this Summer and becomes fuller looking.

It was soooo cold out there tonight even with the sun. The wind was whipping. It may have been in the 40s but the wind chill was in the low 30s. I think my face is wind burned. Annie did a great job playing tonight and was trying so hard to make a goal. The other team was short on players, so one of her teammates was goalie and did an awesome job stopping the ball. Annie tried a new strategy of holding the ball in between her feet until the other team gives up. 🤣 There is one clip of Prestyn (# 13). His games are harder to take video of cause his field is so big.

Today while eating lunch I told her it was close to coming out and we would need to pull it before bed. While eating chicken teriyaki she thought she swallowed it and spit out the chicken in her mouth. I dug through it and it wasn’t there. She started freaking out. Then looked on the chair and it was sitting right there. 🤣 A similar thing happened with Prestyn on one of his bottom teeth. My kids never want to pull them out until they fall out on their own. Ha.

Not sure what made the most difference but the leaf opened and now a new one is already starting. Hoping it won’t take as long this time.
