Update on Carsyn

Filed Under: Family, Special Needs Tagged With: carsyn, cerebral palsy, Holoprosencephaly

Carsyn had his 3 appointments today. They got him set up with thumb splints so that his thumbs will stay out instead of tucked under his other fingers. He wore them about half the day today and I can already see an improvement when we take them off. I am really excited for this because it should help him learn how to pick stuff up better with his hands. I am going to talk with his OT tomorrow to see how much she thinks he should wear them. When they fitted him for those today they said it was really up to us on how much we think he should wear them.

They also fitted him for a stroller. We were able to pick out which one we liked and thought would work best. The one we decided on is very slick and normal looking, which is what I wanted. It is made out of Carbon Fiber so it is lighter. The seat swivels around so I can push and he can look at me. I really like that feature. The seat also comes off and you can keep the base in your house and it will double as a high chair. This will be really nice while on the go.

They also fitted him for a stander and AFO’s {leg braces}. They did this so that he will start learning how to bare weight well, to build his core muscles and to stretch out his hamstrings. He really loved this. They tried him in 3 different ones and he bumped his mouth on one of the trays and started screaming. It left quite a bruise on his top gum. Poor little guy. Something I did notice while looking in his mouth is that his 3rd bottom tooth is coming through but still no teeth on the top. Little Stinker! At the last appointment they put casting on his feet and legs, then let it dry a little bit and cut it off. They are sending those to Washington so that they can make his AFOs.

I really, really hope and pray that his insurance will cover all of his equipment. They are really expensive pieces, but I think they would benefit him GREATLY. I have already started receiving EOB’s from his insurance about other things they won’t cover. It stinks.

I was wondering if you have ever heard of SSI? It's a program for kids and adults with disabilities and would greatly help with anything your insurance wouldn't cover. It's income based though so not everyone qualifies, maybe check into it? Glad things are moving along. Carsyn is just as cute as ever ;)

I have heard of that in passing. Where do you apply for that?

Yay for Carsyn! Sounds like he's going to be moving and grooving soon! :) Just out of curiosity, what will the new stroller do for him that your current stroller doesn't? I hope things work out with the insurance company...it's amazing how they won't cover things now that will hopefully alleviate the need for things later. And good luck with the 30 day shred! I just finished P90X and am probably going to do the shred in the next couple of weeks. Can't wait to hear about your progress!

He still falls over in his stroller. So for long periods it will help him. If he leans for too long he could develop back problems.

Yay that all the fittings went well. I hope insurance works out for you. If it doesn't then appeal. Sometime they change their mind. Good luck.

You are such a good mommy. Carsyn is a blessed little man to have you as his mom. Looking forward to watching everyone's journey on the 30 day shred. I've been a gymaholic for years now so it's so neat to see other people work to get their lives healthier.

I'm so glad to hear Carsyn is making some progress! I hope you have good luck with the insurance companies and get everything you need for him. I think sometimes if you call the company directly, they're willing to work with you on cost, and accept whatever the insurance company allows as payment in full. Just a thought...

The Shred, hmmm? I've been an on again/off again shredder. So far each time I've tried it I've come down with some sort of illness. But I could use a good shredding!

I hope your insurance does pay for all that your lovely little boy needs - he looks so very happy in your photos. I started doing 30-day shred last June. I used to be pretty fit but had not exercised for a while. I did the Level 1 and it almost killed me, but after a week I was on to Level 2 and then Level 3 and it really, really does work. I still do Jillian every day, alternating Level 2 and 3 of 30-day with Levels 1 and 2 of her kettle workout which is really good too and one other of her workouts, the 40 minute toning circuit one. I am now nicely toned and my BP has come down dramatically, to 110 over 65 or thereabouts. So good luck with 30-day. The first few days are the hardest - walking and standing up become challenging :-)

Is the last photo of him in his new stroller/high chair.........either way I can tell a huge difference in the way he is sitting. He looks so, so cute. Have you ever done the 30 Shred? It is what I did after B was born and I love it. Funny thing is I just got the DVD in the mail yesterday and I didn't even know you all were going to do it (I had rented it from Netflix before). I wish I would have known, as I would have loved to be a part of the Shred team, but maybe I'll join anyway.

Those are taken in a highchair that someone is letting me borrow. It does have more support for him though. It will be awhile till we get the other stuff. Have to go through all the insurance hoops. Yes you should totally join our link up. I had 5 total cuttings that I put into water. 4 of the pieces had roots longer than 2 inches with some secondary roots. The last piece is still in water, it has some roots but not enough, so giving it a bit more time. Where I cut it is also making a new stem and I noticed further down it was trying to branch out in other places. Hopefully it takes off this Summer and becomes fuller looking.
