Mexican Restaurant White Dipping Sauce

This might be my favorite dipping sauce for tortilla chips. This Mexican restaurant white sauce is so delicious and easy to make. Most of the Mexican restaurants around where we live usually serve this dipping sauce along with the normal chips and salsa.

What is Mexican Restaurant White Dipping Sauce?

This sauce is sometimes referred to as “salsa blanca”, it is similar to ranch and is served with salsa at many Mexican restaurants in the Hampton Roads Virginia area. According to the Virginian Pilot, it’s thought to have originated from a restaurant named El Toro and actually was first served as a salad dressing.

From what I hear from others is this isn’t common practice everywhere. So, if you haven’t tried this you really need to make it. It is perfect to dip tortilla chips in, serve on a fish taco, or on a quesadilla, etc. The possibilities are endless. Plus, you can throw all the ingredients into one bowl and mix well.

If you would like the sauce to be a little thinner just add a little more milk. If you want it to be spicier add in more red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and hot sauce. Just remember it does get spicier the longer it sits in your refrigerator. This dip is definitely addicting, so I have to be careful not to eat too much at one time! This sauce is super easy to make and is a huge hit when I bring it to a party. Yum! What would you serve with this sauce?

Hi Sarah! Thank you for posting this. I live in NW Louisiana and my favorite mexican restaurant doesn't serve their white dressing with the chips. They call it house dressing and its served with salad and also crispy tacos but I just ask for some and they bring it. Lol! The recipe I have for theirs calls for hellmans Mayo and even vinegar but no sour cream and only spice is paprika. So that's why I was looking further. A local steak house actually has it also and serve it as salad dressing too. A different Mexican restaurant has something similar also served as house dressing. So maybe some of these other ladies can find it just by asking if they carry the White House dressing while eating at their local mexican restaurants. I'm glad I found this website just by searching for the receipe cause now I can see others. Absolutely need one for authentic Spanish rice. But also I'm a single mother and do pretty much everything myself as far as my home and repairs etc so im excited to see your tips and tricks. Thanks again.

It will taste fine. I ate it before the 24 hours. I just think after 24 hours it is more flavorful.

Hi, I've been searching for a recipe like this. Very happy with the outcome because my family enjoys it. Don't like the egg taste miracle whip has. Maybe should've used light. I used greek yogurt, don't think it affected the outcome. Two tablespoons of hot sauce turned my sauce red. I added more lime, oregano, and garlic. I added adobo, pepper, and roasted garlic powder. Tastes just like the sauce at my local mexican restaurant! Thanks!

I will for sure have to make this...they served a white sauce in my hometown of Virginia and I absolutely loved it. I moved to Nashville and I travel across the country a lot and have yet to go to a Mexican restaurant that serves white sauce like my home town.

It is not too spicy. But you always add less pepper.

    • Sarah Halstead says

      October 18, 2015 at 8:22 pm

Probably not. The miracle whip really gives it the flavor.

I moved to Chicago fromRichmond, VA, 3 years ago and only just now learned that this is a Virginia recipe. My boyfriend and I ordered mexican and I asked if they had white sauce. He looked at me like I was crazy. I went to google it and realized this was only a southern thing. I ran out as soon as I found this recipe and we made it together. Now he's obsessed and I'm reliving a happy time from my past. Thank you so much for this recipe!

6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adans 6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adansonii because it was very tall but not bushy. It was nerve wracking at first. I had 5 total cuttings that I put into water. 4 of the pieces had roots longer than 2 inches with some secondary roots. The last piece is still in water, it has some roots but not enough, so giving it a bit more time. Where I cut it is also making a new stem and I noticed further down it was trying to branch out in other places. Hopefully it takes off this Summer and becomes fuller looking.
