Holoprosencephaly | My Unbreakable Moment

Filed Under: Parenting, Special Needs Tagged With: carsyn, cerebral palsy, Holoprosencephaly, netflix, netflix stream team

This unbreakable moment is sponsored by Netflix as a member of their #StreamTeam.

When I think of an unbreakable moment since becoming a mom, I have to say it is when we received Carsyn’s diagnosis. If you have been a reader here for awhile you know Carsyn has Holoprosencephaly (also known as HPE), and because of that he has Cerebral Palsy. When I first heard the neurologist say that word I had no idea what it meant, or how it would affect our family. In the beginning, I wavered for sure, but I did not let his diagnosis break me.

Holoprosencephaly

I did as much research as I could. I sent his MRI off to the Carter’s center (which specializes in HPE), and had them give me a second opinion. I joined a support group, called Families for HoPE. We went to a conference for families that were affected by Holoprosencephaly. We fought back, we didn’t let his diagnosis pull us into despair. Life with him is far from easy, but it is so worth it. He brings so much joy and laughter to our family. Carsyn makes me see life in a whole new way.

Holoprosencephaly

Netflix released a brand new show called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It is about all that Kimmy Schmidt has gone through in her life (including being rescued from a doomsday cult) and how she is not letting anything break her. It is hilarious, of course, since Tina Fey is one of the creators. It is a really great show and I hope they come out with many more seasons!

Right now there are 13 episodes available to watch. Watch a little preview below, then head to Netflix, binge watch the whole season, and let me know what you think!

My unbreakable moment was when I received Carsyn’s Holoprosencephaly diagnosis.

What unbreakable moment have you experienced in your life?

I keep hearing about this show. I guess I need to get Netflix so I can check it out. The two biggest moments that stand out to me as "unbreakable" were both medical moments as well. The first was when I was diagnosed with endometriosis and told I might never have children. Little was known about the disease then. I fought to educate myself as much as possible to make the right choices for my health. The 2nd moment was when my OB told me there was no heartbeat during an ultrasound of my 2nd pregnancy. I've never felt so crushed. It took a lot to take steps toward healing & moving forward, but I refused to let that moment break me and, thankfully, now can snuggle the sweetest 4.5mo baby girl. BTW, I am always so inspired by you and Carsyn. He's an amazing, sweet boy. Grateful I've had the opportunity to see you both (and Kenny and Dustyn) several times.

I have definitely had my share of unbreakable moments that almost broke me for sure. But what doesn't totally break you down makes you stronger, right? <3 Much love to you, mama. You and your family are incredible.

I have wanted to see this show for awhile now and haven't taken the time to sit down to try it yet! But you are such a strong mama, Sarah. Your care and love for your family is evident in everything you do. Unfortunately I've had a few unbreakable moments, my most recent last week. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? Here's to the strength in us all to move forward!

Oooo, I am always looking for a good new show to watch, so I'll be checking this one out when I send the kids to play later! I have far too many unbreakable moments in my life, sometimes I'm certain the next will actually break me, ugh.

You are one strong mom, Sarah! I can see the love you have for your son, it shows through all your pictures. Thanks for sharing this series. I'll check it out. My unbreakable moment was when we found out all the work we'd have to get Parker to get his speech (among other things) on track. I never knew how strong I was until I was fighting to get what he deserves!
