HDR Effect Post Processing for Photoshop

Alright, I know all of my Photoshop friends were wanting to do HDR photos like I made in Lightroom. So I went on a search for a Photoshop Action Similar to the Preset in Lightroom. I found it, is is called HDR for Dummies. Ha ha! There are no directions how to use it where I found the link. So I am going to tell you how I got this photo

to look like this.

Now this may not work for your photos but I tried to get my photo to look the same as it did when I was done in Lightroom. I also made a Colorful Action to look similar to Kelsey Smith’s Crayons Lightroom Preset that I used on my other photos.

First I opened my photo and ran the Colorful Action. I left all the layers there so you can adjust to your liking.  My saturation for colorful is boosted up really high. For any other photo you will probably want to lower the saturation some.

After you run the Colorful Action flatten the image.

Then, this is the part where I just kind of made it up. When you see the HDR action it says HDR for Dummies, Brighten Shadow with USM-{Unsharp Mask} and Brighten Shadow.

I run both brighten shadows first. Do not flatten the image. Then I run the HDR for Dummies. When the gaussian blur box popped up I left it at the original 11.0. I also added the Burnt Edge Action from MCP for a slight vignette. Then I did unsharp mask at 125% ; 3.0 pixels ; Threshold 3.

With that I get this result.

Just for comparison here is that same photo edited in Lightroom.

Which do you like better, Lightroom or Photoshop?

I think I like the lightroom slightly better. I am still working to perfect my Colorful Action. I still need to do some research on how to make it colorful without bumping up the saturation so much. I still have so much to learn about Photoshop.

If you do not want the colorful you can always edit your photo to your liking then use the HDR for Dummies.

I hope this was helpful. If you have any questions or suggestions I am open to them. Just email me. If you do try this I would love to see them. Just link to your post or photo in the comment section. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. As always thanks for reading.

I like lightroom better as well. It looks crisper, and not so over edited (if that makes sense haha)

I tried your suggested HDR action in Photoshop on one of my recent night shots...and boy did it make a difference. I need to get used to the adjustments, but it was very easy to work with.

My before and after photos were supposed to show up in that last comment. Apparently I don't know how to insert an image into a comment. Oh well...

Thanks for sharing what you found and for posting a side by side comparison. I like the Lightroom HDR better in your photo because the underneath of the pier pops out more. The water is also less shadowy. If I only saw the PS HDR I would still say I like the effect. I am going to try this out tomorrow.

6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adans 6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adansonii because it was very tall but not bushy. It was nerve wracking at first. I had 5 total cuttings that I put into water. 4 of the pieces had roots longer than 2 inches with some secondary roots. The last piece is still in water, it has some roots but not enough, so giving it a bit more time. Where I cut it is also making a new stem and I noticed further down it was trying to branch out in other places. Hopefully it takes off this Summer and becomes fuller looking.

Annie did a great job playing tonight and was trying so hard to make a goal. The other team was short on players, so one of her teammates was goalie and did an awesome job stopping the ball. Annie tried a new strategy of holding the ball in between her feet until the other team gives up. 🤣 There is one clip of Prestyn (# 13). Today while eating lunch I told her it was close to coming out and we would need to pull it before bed. While eating chicken teriyaki she thought she swallowed it and spit out the chicken in her mouth. I dug through it and it wasn’t there. She started freaking out. Then looked on the chair and it was sitting right there. 🤣 A similar thing happened with Prestyn on one of his bottom teeth. My kids never want to pull them out until they fall out on their own. Ha.
