Carsyn Update

Filed Under: Family

Well Carsyn is turning 8 months old next week, but with all of his sicknesses and stuff he just had his 6 month well baby visit.

On the left is from his 4 month and right is today: {4 months total apart}

15lbs {75th %tile} / 15lbs 9oz {3rd %tile}

24 1/4 inches {85th %tile} / 25 1/2 inches {3rd %tile}

39cm head circ. / 42cm head circ.

Would sit up for a few seconds at 4 months, still the same. He will still not sit up good. He throws his hands up and throws himself backwards. The doctor said he does not have good torso control at all. She suggested that he sees a physical therapist. They are suppose to call tomorrow for an appointment. I am also going to talk to the Parents as Teachers lady about early intervention.

Here are my concerns: He has not really grown in 4 months. Going from 85th/75th to 3rd %tile is NOT okay. He has not reached any new milestones. If I lay him on the floor he will just lay there. He doesn’t try to roll or move to get something.

Someone told me about something called Angelman Syndrome this evening.  Have you ever heard of it? Carsyn has all of the major symptoms besides the not talking. He does babble. One of the symptoms that stuck out to me is unusually happy/smiling. He smiles ALL the time.

Anyways I am going to talk to the Parents as Teacher lady tomorrow to see what she thinks. I have really worried myself by looking up information. The internet is great, but bad for a concerned mom. At least the doctor did recognize that something is wrong and that I am not crazy. I just want answers. I feel like I am always asking but please pray for Carsyn. Thank you for all your help.

    Thinking of Carsyn and your family. I hope you continue to get more answers so you can get him the help he needs to grow and thrive. <3

    Aw, I'm praying for him or for you!!! Please keep us updated on what you find out. It could be something as simple as he will do things when he wants, but what concerns me is his lack of weight gain. Babies are always a mystery and no two babies are ever the same, even siblings. I know what it's like to want to search the internet for answers. I stopped doing that a long time ago because all it does is scare us parents. I did a little browsing when it came to Liam's hearing issue and I even went as far as researching Autism, but I didn't read too much into it for that very reason. I feel for ya. I know the heartache you're going through because I'm going through it myself right now. Hang in there, Mama. Again, if you need to dump a load on my shoulders or have any questions, I'm here. By the way, that baby looks like a chunk and way more than 15 lbs.! He looks so much bigger in his photos. He's SO dang cute! I just want to hug him (and you too).

    Were you able to set the appointment? I know how hard it is not to jump to conclusions when looking up symptoms (I remember all the things that ran through my mind with Hunter's cysts and I remember your comment about the baby with 13!). It is especially hard when you have an older one who did things by a certain age. What percentile is his head circumference? HIs head looks developmentally appropriate and has grown (another symptom of angelman syndrome). Try to not think about things it could be (I know, hard!), he may just be a little delayed in his gross motor skills. I hope the PT eval goes well and you are able to get him into therapy. I think he will just soar with a little help. :] Praying for you and little man.

    It's so hard as a mom to see one of your babies struggling, and to not know what to do to make it better. I will most definitely keep all of you in my prayers! If you ever need to 'talk', I'm here. And, from the mother of a child with a health condition (diabetes) - always trust your gut, and don't be afraid to make yourself heard. Some health care professionals seem to just want parents to listen, and do what they're told without question. While they might be more knowledgeable about medical interventions, YOU are more knowledgeable about your son. If you have questions, ask. If you don't agree, tell them. Make them listen to you!! {Disclaimer - I am NOT bashing medical professionals. Most of the professionals who've been involved with Taylor have been phenomenal! But, there were one or two early on I really had issues with, and it took me being assertive to get the best care for him.)

    That is so tough, I'm sorry that you are in this boat. I'm glad the doctor has taken you seriously and it sounds like you are on the right path to finding out what is going on. Just trust your instincts and know that you are doing the best for him. Hope you find answers soon, I know the waiting is the hardest part.

    Oh Sarah, I'm sorry you're going through this stress :( It's hard to think something might be wrong with your child and then it's hard to not spend an entire evening on Google or WebMD diagnosing him! I worried about Tyler's growth at one point too (he had stalled out on height and weight while his brothers were shooting ahead as they should have been), but he wasn't as young as Carsyn. Prayers heading your way that it's nothing serious and he'll start growing and developing again!

    Hi Sarah..I'm glad that I finally got around to checking out your new blog! I'm so sad that I can't see it in the blogs I follow on blogger, but I did sign up to get it in my e-mail! I'm so sorry to hear about Carsyn..I'll keep him in my prayers. We have (sort of) a similar situation with Seraphina (who is 11 months), she can not sit up by herself, she doesn't crawl at all (in fact she HATES being on her tummy), and she also throws herself backwards like you said Carsyn does, and she doesn't "talk" at all, no ma-ma's, da da's or baba..just gurgling and noise. But at least we have a few more answers than you..this was caused by the trauma she experienced at birth and she sustained some brain damage so they say she will probably end up with some form of cerebal palsey (but honestly, it's in Gods hands..so I take what "they" say with a grain of salt). She has been enrolled in an early interevention program since birth and has physical therapy and water therapy each week. It's so hard as a parent to not have answers and it's so easy to get wrapped up in the internet trying to search for answers. When I hear of other children Seraphinas age progressing normally, it breaks my heart a little because I feel like her and I both are missing out on a normal childhood. But, what is normal anyway??! Anyway, I didn't mean to write a novel here..just wanted to let you know that I can relate and that I'll be thinking of you guys!

    I'm just getting around to visiting other blogs and I read about Carsyn and I'm sorry to hear about the developmental concerns. That would be very tough for me as a parent so I can only imagine how hard that is to work through and trust the Lord with. I pray that the Lord's hand is resting on Carsyn and that His will is done. I pray that Carsyn is okay and that he surprises us all! Please keep us posted Sarah!

    January 7, 2011 at 9:10 am

    Sarah, I am just reading this post, so sorry I am responding late. I have not read the response of the other ladies, but I am glad to hear he will be going to physical therapy. I am a physical therapist, and although I did not work in pediatrics, I have several friends who do. It will make a huge difference and your Carsyn's Physical Therapist will be able to give you a lot of information about his physical function as he/she begins working with him. There is reason for concern, as you know and as the doctors suggested, but be no more internet researching. It is informative, but often leads to more worry than necessary. Know this, when I am finished leaving this comment, my knees will be on the floor and prayers lifted to my Savior to give you peace, to intercede for Carsyn, and for the medical personnel that cares for him. Blessings and hugs to you! Amber

    You will certainly be in our prayers because I know how scary this is given we have had many scares and some issues along the way as well. You are soooo right in understanding how the internet can inform, but can also instill unnecessary panic, so use caution. Please keep us updated and you will without question be in my daily thoughts and prayers.

I know how scary it can be when your instincts are telling you something is wrong. I'm sending prayers your way and hoping you find answers soon. Ok, step away from google. I know, I do the same thing, but it only makes you more worried and doesn't actually help anything. It sounds like you're on the path to some answers and you're really good about trusting your gut, so just put away the internet, at least for now. I know you must be so scared and I hope you find some answers soon. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

    January 6, 2011 at 11:23 pm

    No more internet searching for you! Because no one EVER goes on the internet and writes about how everything is fine or how well everything turned out in the end, they ONLY come to talk worst case scenario and write about how scared/worried/bad things are. Mason's only gained 9 ounces in the last 3+ months. I know a lot of times babies don't gain in big spurts once they start moving around a lot, but that's obviously not the case with either of our little guys. Sending lots of good thoughts for you both. Hang in there momma, all the worrying in the world won't get you anywhere. Hopefully you'll get some answers soon! *hugs*

6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adans 6 weeks ago I cut off the top of my Monstera Adansonii because it was very tall but not bushy. It was nerve wracking at first. I had 5 total cuttings that I put into water. 4 of the pieces had roots longer than 2 inches with some secondary roots. The last piece is still in water, it has some roots but not enough, so giving it a bit more time. Where I cut it is also making a new stem and I noticed further down it was trying to branch out in other places. Hopefully it takes off this Summer and becomes fuller looking.
