Auto Focus Fine Tuning

Well if you read yesterday I have been having a few focus issues. I went scouring the internet for answers because it was really bugging me. I also had a lovely friend remind me about back focusing. Well the D7000 also has back button focusing issues. UGH. I found several sites that were talking about AF Fine Tuning and I had no idea what exactly it was.  Well apparently on several Nikons and maybe even some Canons have an option to fine tune your focus points. I was noticing that even though I had focused on an eye it was actually focusing on the cheek. Here is an example with the flower. Click to make larger to really see the details.

f/2.2 – ISO 160 – 1/250sec

You can see in the top photo with the fine tuning turned off the focus is not on the flower it is on the rocks. Even though the focus point was on the flower.

Now on this photo with fine tuning set to -10 the focus is spot on.

f/2.2 – ISO 160 – 1/250sec

I didn’t just test it on this flower. I tested it several different times and got the same result.

I hope this helps someone. Try it out if your camera is capable and see if you notice a difference. I would love to hear what you think.

I saw some info on fine tuning a while ago and tried to look into it on my 60d. of course Canon decided it wasn't as important so they removed it from to 60d. I think they added it back to the 7d of course. I haven't really had any focus issues (although my focus seems better on my tamron lens than my nifty fifty) I hope that fixes your issues!

I definitely need to try this out--I've been having a very similar issue with my D90 and I assumed it was due to it needing a thorough cleaning (which it still totally does!)...thanks for the tip!

My camera isn't capable of this stuff. And that's probably good. With my abilities (or lack thereof), I think I'm better off sticking with the automatic! ;)

I have the D5000 and I just saw someone comment that it doesn't have fine tuning, but damn I wish it did. This is by far the #1 problem I have. My focus is ALWAYS off and it drives me NUTS!!! Makes me want to upgrade, stat!

Interesting, I sometimes seem to have the same issue and thought it was an error on my end. I may have to do a bit of fine tuning on my own.

That's a big difference! I'm a canon girl and I don't think my camera has that option, but it's a great tip. I wonder why the focus was so off without the fine tuning? Did it just start or have you had problems with it for a long time? Either way, glad you found a solution!

I really hope that's the problem I'm having. I have been so frustrated, like want to put my camera away for a while frustrated, about my focus being off!

I wish I could do that. :( My T1i doesn't offer fine tuning... but the focus is definitely off. Sigh.

So glad you found a solution! That would drive me crazy. I have not found that setting on my D5000. I think it is only offered on the D7000 and up, but its great info to have. I know the D7000s are very popular and lots of people have had the same problem. I'm pinning your post to share with others. Thanks for the shout out ;)
