Sparkler Writing

Filed Under: Photography, Tutorials Tagged With: photography tutorial

I had a engagement photo shoot this weekend and we decided to do sparkler writing photos. It was pretty easy. We only had to do about 4 tries on each thing. Which actually this love was the first one we did but we tried it a couple more times to see if it looked better.

Sparkler Writing

Settings: Left Photo- f/22, ISO 100, Bulb Setting for 14.5s. Right Photo- f/16, ISO 100, Bulb Setting for 3.3s.

I put my camera on the tripod. For the photo on the left I told them to stand completely still and I ran around them while my camera was on the bulb setting. I used my remote to start taking the photo then hit the remote again to stop taking the photo. You just had to have a pretty low ISO and small aperture so the photo wasn’t too bright. It was fun and I can not wait to play with this more.

how aren't you showing up in the pictures? and also what is a bulb setting, how to find it, ect? I have a Nikon D3100

Not sure why I don't show up. Guessing it is because the sparkler is brighter then me and that the only way they showed up is if they stood completely still. Bulb setting should been seen when you adjust your shutter speed all the way down.

How cool is that! I think I have some sparklers left to try this! I followed your tutorial for fireworks. I didn't use a tripod but I think I did all right. http://deniseisrundmt.com/2012/07/09/fireworks-and-lights/

I love these photos and really wish I could try this effect out--I definitely need to look into the whole bulb setting thing! (Even though I think sparklers are banned here in El Paso, boo!)
