Tutorial Tuesday | Panning Photos

Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday! Ashley of Ramblings and Photos and I will be bringing you a new challenge every week, to stretch your shooting and editing skills. This week we are talking about how to pan photos. You know all those cool photos where the car or person is in focus but the background is moving? I just love the way they look.

I did this one awhile back. Most of you probably remember.

(settings | F/5 | ISO 320 | SS 1/30)

Here are some tips to follow:
Select a slow shutter speed. Somewhere around 1/30 or 1/50. You just have to play around with it.

Try to track your subject smoothly. If you are really shaky think about using a tripod.

You want to be parallel with the path of your subject. Also make sure that nothing is going to get in the way while taking the photo.

Once you’ve released the shutter continue to pan with the subject. Even after you’ve heard the shot is complete. That way the panning is as smooth as possible throughout the shot.

Use a single focus point and focus on the subject. Manual focus would work too. I am not that good with manual focus yet. You could also try continuous focusing but I have not had much luck with that.

Use f/5 or higher. As much as light allows. That way you can get your subject in focus.

One last point just remember that your subject will probably never be completely in focus. That is okay, it just adds more motion to the photo.

Here is my new photo. It is Dustyn riding his dirt bike.
(settings | F/11 | ISO 100 | SS 1/50)

Ready to join in the fun? Here’s how to do it:

1. Read through today’s tutorial.
2. Choose your favorite shot (or more!) to share with us.
3. Don’t forget to grab the button for your post!
4. Link up between now and next Monday.

PS: If you have any photography or editing suggestions, please don’t hesitate to let Ashley or me know! We would love to feature your tutorial.

This is a great concept, but for my point and shoot it is a no go. The slowest speed I have on my camera is for Fireworks. It gives me a blurred effect but when I try it outside it is just a white blur. So I know what the technique is and how it is supposed to look. So I will have to give this weeks tutorial a miss. Cheers

I wish I had this when I was trying to photograph my son in the Nationals Mountain Biking Downhill race this past fall. I got a few, but it was super difficult in the rain and mud to get good shots. Love the dirtbike shot.

Still on my to-do list: a gallery wall and living wall, but I'm a bit nervous since I'm not exactly good at that. One day, though... I also dream of getting a projector to display scenes on the big white wall.

I'm going to miss my Halloween decorations when they come down - time to start scouring thrift stores for Christmas decor, I suppose! 🎄

What I have left to do still: Get the top for my desk and seal it. Organize my craft stuff and put it on the shelves under my desk. Figure out my gallery wall above my desk. Order my @wallygrowplanters for my living wall. And of course buy more books and plants. 😆
