Every year around the holidays we get together with our friends and family. For dinner I love serving ham along with my favorite green bean casserole recipe. I make the green bean casserole in a cast iron skillet so you only have to dirty up one dish and it tastes amazing.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh green beans
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 12 ounces of mushrooms, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 2 cups fried onions
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt
  • pepper

Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of water and 2 tablespoons salt to a boil.
  2. Add the green beans and blanch for 5 minutes.
  3. Drain and then plunge the green beans into a large bowl of ice water to stop the cooking.
  4. Drain and set aside.
  5. Melt the butter in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper, cook for about 5 minutes.
  7. Add the garlic and nutmeg and continue to cook for another couple minutes.
  8. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and cook for another minute.
  9. Add broth and simmer for 1 minute.
  10. Decrease to medium-low heat and add the half-and-half.
  11. Cook until the mixture thickens, approximately 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  12. Remove from heat and add 1 cup fried onions and the Worcestershire sauce.
  13. Top with remaining onions.
  14. Place in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes, or until bubbly.
  15. Remove and serve.

I love how easy it is to prepare the Hormel Cure 81 bone-in ham. It is already cooked so you only have to heat it through. It is 12 minutes per pound at 275. It also includes the honey glaze mix. The cherrywood flavored ham is our favorite.

Hormel Ham can be found in the meat section of Walmart.
